Villin is a tissue-specific actin-binding glycoprotein that is associated with the maintenance of the microvilli brush border found in the gastrointestinal mucosal epithelium. Villin is expressed in carcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract, renal cell carcinomas, pancreatic carcinomas, endometrial carcinomas, as well as carcinomas of the ovary and lungs. Anti-Villin antibodies can be useful for identifying and differentiating adenocarcinomas of these organs from other organs in the body. Additionally, it may be helpful in separating carcinoid tumors from other endocrine tumors.
