The gene NKX3-1 expresses the homeobox protein NKX3.1, a transcription factor which binds to a particular sequence and can behave as a transcriptional repressor. This protein is involved in normal prostate development, regulating proliferation of glandular epithelium and the formation of prostate ducts. NKX-3.1 also acts as a tumor suppressor controlling prostate carcinogenesis. Abnormal expression of the NKX3-1 gene is associated with prostate tumor progression. The NKX3-1 is important in cancer research, specifically in prostate cancer.
