Encoded by MUC2 gene, Mucin 2 functions in secreting and coating an insoluble mucous barrier that protects and lubricates the epithelia of the intestines, airways, and other mucus membrane-containing organs. This protein also functions in excluding bacteria from the inner mucus layer by providing a protective barrier against particles and infectious agents. Pseudomyxoma peritonei and signet ring cell adenocarcinoma are the diseases related to mutations of this gene. The Anti-MUC2 Antibody is important in studies focusing on the intestinal tract and other mucus-membrane containing organs.
