Description	Human herpes simplex virus type I (HSV-I) is part of the Herpesvirus family which also includes HSV-II, Epstein-Barr virus (mononucleosis), herpes zoster (chicken pox) and cytomegalovirus. They grow in the cell nuclei, bud through the nuclear membrane and cause latent infections. HSV are among the most common infectious agents of man, usually transmitted through close personal contact. HSV-I is responsible for causing gingivostomatitis or fever blisters. There is a significant degree of cross-reactivity between HSV-I and HSV-II. No cross-reactivity is seen with the Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus or herpes zooster virus.
