The growth hormone is encoded by the GH1 gene. It is a member of the somatotropin/prolactin hormone family which functions in growth control by stimulating the liver and other tissues to secrete IGF-1, by stimulating both the differentiation and proliferation of myoblasts, and by stimulating amino acid uptake and protein synthesis in muscle and other tissues. Diseases associated with this gene include Kowarski syndrome and growth hormone deficiency.
