The protein encoded by this gene is the ligand for FAS. Both are transmembrane proteins. Interaction of FAS with this ligand is critical in triggering apoptosis of some types of cells such as lymphocytes. Defects in this gene may be related to some cases of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Description
Specificity: Fas-L antibody detects endogenous levels of Fas-L protein. Not tested with other proteinsRelevance: The full length of FasL contains 281 amino acids, consisting of the transmembrane domain, extracellular domain, and the cytoplasmic region. A metalloproteinase cleaves the membrane-bound FasL to produce soluble Fas (sFasL), which exists as a homotrimer. The sFasL shows lower cytotoxicity than membrane bound FasL.
