The type IV collagen is encoded by the two genes, COL4A1 and COL4A2. It is the major structural component of basement membranes along with laminins and enactins. It is able to form insoluble fibres with high tensile strength. The Anti-Collagen Type IV Antibody can recognize type IV collagen in basement membranes in kidney, placenta, lung, skin, and cornea; but it is unable to recognize denatured type IV collagen. The antibody is useful in detecting extracellular matrix proteins as well as the loss of parts of basement membrane in carcinomas.
