The CD21 gene encodes a membrane protein, which functions as a receptor for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) binding on human T-cells and B-cells. It also participates in the activation of B lymphocytes. Variations in this gene are related to vulnerability to systemic lupus erythematosus type 9 (SLEB9). This gene is useful in research regarding diseases related to immunodeficiency.
