Description	Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) (acute-phase response factor) is a member of the STAT protein family. Activation of STAT3 is through phosphorylation in response to various cytokines and growth factors including IFNs, EGF, IL5, IL6, HGF, LIF and BMP2. It mediates the expression of a variety of genes in response to cell stimuli and possesses oncogenic potential and carries anti-apoptotic activities. Thus, STAT3 plays a key role in many cellular processes such as cell growth, apoptosis and murine fetal development. Stat3 may localize to the nucleus or the cytoplasm and activated STAT3 is reported in a number of human cancers.
