Description	Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a 28 amino acid neuropeptide or neurotransmitter encoded by human VIP gene, located on chromosomal region 6q24. Vasoactive intestinal peptide is seceretd by a variety of organs and it has been isolated from them, few examples include intestine, salivary glands, and the male and female genital tracts, brain upper respiratory, nasal mucosa, human eosinophils, polymorphonuclear and mononuclear leucocytes. VIP stimulates mucous secretion, vasodilatation, and smooth muscle contraction and relaxation in bronchus and many other organs. According to various studies, VIP plays a pivotal role in immune regulation. In one such a immune regulation study of murine immune system, VIP prevented the proliferation of lymphocytes in response to the T cell mitogens. VIP influenced IgA secretion by lymphocytes from gastrointestinal tissues and spleen. Studies of VIP in the human immune system, is known to have inhibited the proliferative response of T lymphocytes to mercuric chloride, and inhibited natural killer (NK) cell function.
