Description	Human Transferrin, is a metallo-binding protein, binds to iron, it is secreted mainly in the hepatocytes. Transferrin-positive hepatocytes do not follow a distinct pattern and exist as groups or singularly, even though some propensity towards periportal clustering is seen. Human Transferrin can be seen by moderate staining in Kupffer cells in some specimens. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated transferrin in a wide variety of other tissues including stomach, duodenum, gall bladder, thyroid, kidney, male and female reproductive tracts, skin, and in histiocytes. Transferrin has diverse roles: it does iron transport across intestinal mucosa; intracellular iron transport; and providing non-specific immunity against microorganisms by chelating free iron. Transferrin has also been reported to act as a growth-promoting factor for pituitary tumors and for malignant breast tumors and malignant breast tumor show higher transferrin immunoreactivity compared to benign lesions.
